I first photographed Lou Reed at London’s Rainbow Theatre in 1974 during his ‘Sally Can’t Dance’ tour. Although I had bought a ticket, I wasn’t really supposed to be taking pictures: I had spare film in my sock, lens down my trousers and camera shoved up my shirt. While milling around the arena, casually looking for a spare seat before the show started, I spotted the stage door open and unattended, to the right of the stage. With no security looking, I swooped through the door and through the backstage corridors, only wishing I had a clipboard or a ladder instead of bulky, lens-filled pants. Casually making my way down the hallway, a door opened further along and a grumpy-looking bloke came out, marching with some purpose straight past me. It was then that Lou Reed, seemingly off his face and furious, poked his head out of the same door and launched a brown, glass bottle down the corridor towards the bloke. It came flying in my direction and just missed my head, shattering against the wall beside me. I managed to have a brief (and less than coherent) chat with Lou, before he slammed the door in my face and I went back out to find a seat.
